This course is designed for the perinatal nurse who has completed a Basic EFM course & is working in an Antepartum or Labor & Delivery setting. With the new format, there is some Online Learning Prerequisites to complete prior to your in person class. Please note that you will not be able to attend class if the online portion is not completed.
Details & Instructions are in your REQUIRED AWHONN student materials that must be purchased separately from Kendal Hunt Publishing. The New unopened Student packet contains a unique individual code for each student. You cannot share the information or use a previously used book.
The Required online prerequisite will take approximately 3.5hrs & must be completed no more than 30 days prior to the in person class. (Access to the perquisite items starts 30 days before the course date & ends 1 day before the course date.)
This new & updated format includes topics such as Assessment & Interpretation of EFM Strips,, Interventions, Various Techniques in EFM & Videos on Leopold’s Maneuvers, IUPC, FSE and Intermittent Auscultation followed by a brief post test.

Medical Spanish for Healthcare Professionals: Basic (Beginner level)
Have you thought about learning Spanish? Would you like to be able to speak medical basics with patients? This basic medical Spanish course is designed for the beginner Spanish speaker and does not require any prior knowledge of Spanish!
The rising Hispanic Latino population in the United States creates potential communication gaps with non-English speaking patients. Clinicians who can learn to speak basic Spanish phrases can increase their confidence and competence to provide quality patient care. Health care professionals who can speak conversational and basic Spanish phrases to Spanish–speaking patients can improve patient satisfaction, decrease communication errors, and potentially avoid medical errors.
Learn how to introduce yourself and speak basic medical phrases in Spanish! This course is designed for the beginner or someone with 1 year or less in Spanish learning. This course will introduce pronunciation, simple grammar, and medical terminology you can use as a healthcare professional to better communicate with your Spanish-speaking patients and families. This is a 7 hour intensive that gives you lots of time to practice so you can walk out ready to ‘Habla’!”

Instructional Method: Live lecture with group practice (workbook provided) 2 Introductory Spanish Intensives available: Sunday 8:30am-5pm & Wednesday (repeated)
Course Outcomes – At the completion of this course the learner will be able to:
- Discuss general cultural and language considerations for Spanish speaking patients with limited English.
- Introduce self to a Spanish speaking patient.
- Identify basic Spanish phrases needed to communicate with Spanish speaking patients in your role as a health care provider.
- Describe resources available for health care providers to learn Spanish phrases and resources for non-English speaking patients to receive translated medical information.
- Demonstrate the use of assessment questions that stimulate a one-word or yes-no response
To be eligible for continuing education credit, learners must attend this course in its entirety as evidenced by badge scan, complete the post-test with a minimum passing score of 80%, successfully demonstrate Spanish speaking skills during peer-to-peer exercises, and complete the course evaluation form.
